Church Coffee Morning: there is a coffee morning at St James Church, Boroughbridge on Saturday from 10am-noon.

Race Night: Boroughbridge and District Chamber of Trade holds its annual race night on Saturday in the Coronation Hall, 7 for 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 and are available from Hair on the Square, 01423 323036.

Village Barbecue: Marton-le-Moor holds its annual barbecue on Saturday from 5.30pm in the meeting room. In addition to the barbecue, the draw for the gold, silver and bronze competition will take place with the lucky winners having a glider flight from Sutton Bank, a session in a Tucano simulator, and wine. Richard Cole has kindly donated the prizes. The winners of the sunflower competition will also be announced with the overall winner being presented with the Ron Smith Trophy. Woodworking Demonstration: the John Boddy Timber Store in Boroughbridge has a free demonstration on Saturday with Simon Whitehead on woodturning. Roman Day: there is a fun day out for all the family on Sunday from 10am-4pm at the Roman Day at Aldborough Museum. The day includes Roman re-enactors who will be giving a talk on different aspects of Roman life, guided tours of the site, the step inside guide and activity sheet for families, a presentation for children, Roman games, dressing up as a Roman and refreshments including cream teas. Minskip Multi Use Games Area: the official opening of the Minskip Multi Use Games Area, MUGA, is on Sunday from 2-5pm and the Mayor of Boroughbridge, Graham Archer, has kindly agreed to officially open the facility. The afternoon features a five a side football tournament for six teams of under 11s. Refreshments of beefburgers, hot dogs and hot and cold drinks will be available and the organisers are looking forward to meeting the future users of the MUGA. Historical Society: thanks go to Christine and Margaret Tasker for organising an enjoyable outing to Raby Castle. Members also enjoyed taking their Second World War display to the 100th Aldborough and Boroughbridge Show. The first meeting of the society’s autumn programme will be on Medieval Market Towns, including a look at Boroughbridge. It will be presented by Peter Lee in the Jubilee Suite above Boroughbridge Library on Tuesday, all are welcome. Aldborough, Boroughbridge and Dunsforth WI : the September meeting is on Wednesday at 7.30pm in Aldborough Village Hall with Tales from a YEB Meter Man.

Countrywomen’s Association: members of the Boroughbridge group were pleased to receive a first prize for their branch display at Tockwith Show. Over £200 was raised at the pearl anniversary coffee morning. Thanks to all the helpers. As usual a donation will be made to local charities. At the September meeting Jack Duckworth and friends will entertain members for their summer supper party to complete the pearl anniversary celebrations. Sequence Dance: there is a sequence dance in the Coronation Hall next Saturday, September 14 from 7-10.30pm. The admission charge of £2 includes tea and biscuits.

Church Services: this Sunday there is Holy Communion at Aldborough at 8.30am, a Toddlers’ Service at Aldborough at 9.10am. Choral Communion at St James Church, Boroughbridge at 10am, Parish Communion at Roecliffe at 10am and Children’s Church at Minskip at 11.15am. Boroughbridge Methodist Church has Sunday Worship at 10.30am. On Wednesday there is Holy Communion at St James Church at 10.45am.
