AN army of bag packers turned out in force to Morrisons in Wetherby last Saturday to help raise funds for charity.

Brownies and Cubs were among those who helped shoppers at the checkouts in return for a donation for the Emma Maltby Memorial Fund.

Organiser Jane Stevens said the event raised £1,110.

“Thank you to everyone who gave their support on the day and to Morrisons for agreeing to let us fundraise - their customers were very generous.”

The fundraising effort was to support the charity which provides education for children, teenage and adult cancer patients attending LGI for treatment.

“The fund finances two Learning Mentors to provide educational support to patients aged five-25,” added Jane.

“Our Learning Mentors do a fantastic job enabling the cancer sufferers to continue with their educational path - whether it be sitting GCSEs in hospital or helping the patients with coursework.”

While undergoing treatment, a young cancer patient can miss out on long periods of educational support and vital school or college exams.

This, coupled with the trauma of the illness, can add to their distress.

The Emma Maltby Memorial Fund needs to raise over £80,000 annually to cover the cost of the two Learning Mentors over the next three years.
