Nidd Chorale's summer concert

NIDDERDALE'S popular chamber choir, Nidd Chorale, will be performing a summer concert next weekend.

Taking place at St Chad's Church in Middlesmoor as part of the Nidderdale festival, the concert will feature a performance of the Nidderdale Carol, which was commissioned by the choir last year.

Composed by Andrew Bryden, director of music at Ripon Cathedral, with words by Guy Wilson, a member of the Chorale, this beautiful song celebrates the birth of the Christ-Child in the context of the unique scenery of Nidderdale.

Guy had the idea for a Nidderdale carol when reading Malcolm Neesam's Harrogate Great Chronicle - which explains that in ancient Celtic the word 'nidd' meant 'bright' or 'shining'.

The concert programme will also include a selection of music by Purcell, Haydn, Handel and Mendelssohn, along with some traditional folk songs and modern pieces, all conducted by David Darling.

Singing with Nidd Chorale is soloist Alice Bainbridge from Hampsthwaite, and the organist is Paul Dewhurst, organist at Pontefract Church and former organ scholar at Beverley Minster.

The concert is on Saturday, July 11, at 7.30pm. Tickets are 8, available from Harrogate International Centre on 0845 130 8840 or at the door on the evening.
