The bunting is up and the flags are flying to celebrate the Queen’s acession to the throne.

Over the weekend Kirkgate was hung with union jack flags and the town hall bedecked in red, white and blue to kick off the city’s year long festivities.

A special service was held in the cathedral last Sunday, February 5 to mark 60 years since the then 25-year-old Princess Elizabeth became Queen after her father’s death on February 6 1952.

On Monday, February 6, at 8.30am, a peal of bells rang out from the cathedral for half an hour officially starting our Jubilee year.

The next event in the calendar is the annual Pancake Race on Shrove Tuesday, February 21, from the cathedral down Kirkgate.

There will be a Jubilee theme with red, white and blue pancakes.
