FOR anyone who loves the dazzling, fractured art pop of Field Music’s new album Plumb, just released this week, and who’s thinking of going to see them live at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds next Monday night but is wondering how on earth they manage to replicate their intricate songs on stage, I have a simple message: don’t worry, they don’t really try to.
A modern day 10CC doing their own Smile, this thoughtful XTC meets Metronomy outfit from Sunderland are actually looser and more exciting live, which, as co-founder Peter Brewis told me recently, is because they don’t think gig and records should be the same beast at all.
Peter said: “A live show should be an interpretation, not a replication. I like there to be a different feel live, a different energy, a different drive. I’ve seen lots of gigs where everything’s been perfect and it’s been dull.”
I’M going to take the risk of looking silly here (and not for the first time).
Harrogate’s Viper Rooms which, last night, played host to the mighty Tinchy Stryder, has just announced with a triumphant fanfare that “massive YouTube sensation” Alexa Goddard is coming to town on March 2.
Now I can tell this is good, sort of, and I can tell it is exciting, I think, I only have one question: who on earth is Alexa Goddard?

RIPLEYBLUES’ next show at Ripley Town Hall is an intimate affair with a top guitar-slinger from Pasadena, California.
Guy Tortora is an understated Americana sort of guy, so he should be perfect for the ambience of the Blues Room (capacity 55) next Friday, February 24.
Playing both his own songs and old standards and traditional tunes with his band, he’s not the flashy type, preferring to leave the songs space to live and thrive.
His appearance follows praise for this local promotions firm from recent guests like The Hamsters, who described their RipleyBlues’ date on their recent farewell tour as “the jewel in the crown of their gigs” and Hazel Scott of the Cajun Roosters who played Ripley during the worst snows of the winter and said it was one of her favourite-ever gigs.

YOU might remember the aimiable musical entertainer Ginger Elvis from a while back. Well, he’s transmogrified into a new character and he’s coming to play Vanilla (ex-Crabtrees) in Harrogate tomorrow, Saturday.
Now portraying himself as Howlin Mat, he’s now every inch a blues man and one helluva guitar player.
You can catch him between 5-7pm tomorrow after appearances across the country, including the High Voltage Festival, but let’s leave the last word to Mat Partner, sorry, Howlin Man himself.

THE Alexandra bar in Harrogate welcomes back one of the area’s most popular live covers bands next Thursday in the shape of Dr Thirsty.
Looking further ahead, top local band Kasiuss bring their original rock sounds to The Alex in March.
FANS of classic late 70s ska (The Specials, The Beat, Bad Manners, Toots & The Maytals) and punk/new wave (The Jam, The Clash, Dexy’s, Stone Roses) should catch Leeds-based band The Details at the Board Inn in Knaresborough tomorrow night, Saturday.
This five-piece ska, soul and mod band are well-travelled, well-seasoned and well-loved by UK mods everywhere.
