Hugh Ripley Hall thrown lifeline by city council

Hugh Ripley Hall as a community venue in Ripon has been given fresh hope, following months of uncertainty over its future.

Ripon City Council has agreed to take on the community centre and set up a new committee, headed up by Ripon city Coun Pauline Mchardy.

City Coun Stuart Martin, vice-chairman of the new committee, said the council hopes to make Hugh Ripley Hall a “much more community based facility that pays for itself.”

Hugh Ripley Hall came under threat after Harrogate Borough Council said it was considering selling the building in 2011. The cash-strapped local authority suggested closing the building as it coped with a £2.7m cut in funding from central Government.

“It is part of Ripon’s heritage and is important to the council,” said Coun Martin.

Ripon City Council is set to take over the building in April, with the borough council retaining ownership as management is transferred to Ripon. The city council voted to purchase accounting software for the hall at a meeting on Monday, January 28.
