THE clock will turn back 60 years on Ripon market square when the city celebrates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the summer.

The city’s Jubilee 2012 Working Party has revealed a full line-up of events to mark Her Majesty’s milestone on Monday, June 4, including a 1950s fashion competition.

Committee member John Richmond said: “We want people to come on to the market square dressed in 1950s gear.”

The committee is seeking three volunteer judges to pick out who they think is the best-dressed and – to help them identify authentic-looking clothing – Mr Richmond is calling for people to get their photo albums out and contact him with as much information as possible about the sartorial styles of 1952.

“We want people to put their thinking caps on and remember what it was like,” he added, urging people to come forward with information about other trends of the time – such as music.

In addition to the fashion competition, a whole host of other festivities will take place throughout the day on the traffic-free square, from 10.30am.

Events will include soap box derbies featuring adult teams and children from Ripon’s primary and secondary schools, five Punch and Judy show performances, a tractor pull, barrel rolling, a ‘silly-hat half-pint relay’ between pubs, a parade of classic cars from the 1950s, Ripon City Band, jugglers, a dog obedience class, and Festival of Youth.

There are also plans for a big screen on the square to relay national television coverage of the Jubilee celebrations and also show the market square crowds other events going on around Ripon.

The evening entertainment is scheduled to begin at 7pm with a swing duo followed by tribute band Mercury.

l Anyone who can help or has further ideas for games or entertainment on the day is asked to contact Mr Richmond on 01765 607364 or Coun Andrew Williams on 07793 552710.
