Battle of the cheeses at food festival
A WAR to end all cheese wars has settled an age-old debate. Yorkshire took on Lancashire in a contest to churn the best cheese at a food festival in Harrogate on Sunday and Monday.
And now, Yorkshire cheesemakers can lay claim to victory, as a taste test has sealed a sweeping win for Thirsk-based Shepherds Purse, founded by Judy Bell.
She had secured twice as many votes as former Coronation Street star Sean Wilson, who now runs the Saddleworth Cheese Company, to be named champion of the cheesemakers at the Yorkshire Event Centre's Speciality Food Show.
Thousands of people turned out to take part in the two-day event, which showcased 140 food and drink suppliers at local, regional, national and international level.
A stunning variety of specialist goods was on offer, from truffle oils to taleggio, to white pudding and potato vodka.
Producers from Harrogate and North Yorkshire were limited, the event instead focusing on up-and-coming artisan foodmakers and importers looking for outlets in the region.
To give the public a glimpse into this trade-only event, Food and Drink talked to suppliers and rounded up the best products of the show to submit to our tasting panel.
