AN historic Ripon chapel is to hold a craft afternoon to raise much needed funds for the building’s redevelopment.

St John’s Bondgate will hold the event on Saturday, November 12. Crafts and produce will be on sale between 2 -4pm, with a silent auction of more valuable items.

St John’s, which dates from the early 12th century, is one of the city’s oldest chapel foundations. The present chapel replaced the medieval building in 1869, but is now in urgent need of internal repair and redecoration. The chapel committee is planning to develop the building to make it more accessible and comfortable so it can be used more throughout the week.

Rev John Rutter, minister at St John’s, said he is keen to see greater community use of the building.

“The chapel is increasingly important to the people of Bondgate for special services, but we would love to see it being used by community groups at other times. Redevelopment will make this possible.”

Entry to the craft afternoon is free, and refreshments will be served.
