OUR President Jan welcomed everyone to our March meeting. We are looking forward to a great variety of events taking place in the coming months. These include singing for larks, designing and making pottery, visiting the Himalyan Gardens at Grewelthorpe and lending a helping hand with the catering at the Great Yorkshire Show. The Handicraft show being held on March 20 in the new Cogs building is concentrating our attention at the moment and it is hoped that we will have a successful show this ye
The subject of our speaker Denise Cullingworth, who entitled her talk “A New Slant on Pooh Sticks”, soon became clear. As a specialist in the bowel cancer screening plan, or SSP for short, working in the Harrogate area, she stressed how important it
is for people to take part in the relatively new national screening programme. Bowel cancer affects almost one in 20 people and 16,000 people die from the disease every year. It is a subject that is rarely talked about openly, but early diagnosis is paramount. In the privacy of one’s home, a simple procedure is all that is needed in order for a diagnosis to be made. A positive result may not always mean there is cancer present, and further screening often shows a non-malignant problem that can be easily corrected. At the moment, people over 60 are being targeted, but it is hoped to extend the age range in the near future.
Peggie Gregson’s “Hints on Regularity” was the winning entry in our monthly competition.
Our speaker on April 1 will be Tanya Umpleby from the Cooking Fantastic shop in Knaresborough. She will be demonstrating and cooking, using some of the many gadgets sold at this unique shop.
Visitors and new members are always welcome. The meetings are held at Knaresborough Cricket Club, Aspin Lane and start at 7.30pm.
