Ripon’s City Development Manager is aiming to get organisations in Ripon working together to boost trade in the city.

Angela Harris, who is set to leave her position on Ripon City Council at the end of the month, is preparing to launch a new tourism website and get Ripon involved in the national Benchmarking Project to create a “thriving Ripon to satisfy visitors and boost trade.”

“For me, we have to get people working together. Businesses that haven’t worked together before need to come together to create real success,” said Ms Harris.

Following the success of Discover Ripon hour every Tuesday evening from 8-9pm – an initiative launched last month getting businesses in Ripon to promote their services on social networking site Twitter – Ms Harris now hopes to develop a Discover Ripon website after receiving the approval of the council during a meeting on Monday, November 5.

“Twitter is part of the way forward and we want to find ways of engaging with youngpeople,” said Ms Harris, who will use a chunk of her marketing budget to set up the site. The council has started running a free Twitter surgery for businesses keen to learn about becoming more tech-savvy.

The council will also undertake a Benchmarking Project, worth £1,000, after bidding the Government for the survey. The national scheme is conducted in over 140 towns in England and will assess Ripon’s current performance in comparison to other areas across the country.

“It will give us an indication of what the business confidence in Ripon is like,” said Ms Harris, who is urging business owners to complete her anonymous Town Benchmarking Business Confidence Survey to assess current performance.

Miss Harris started the new role in February and decided to quit after just 10 weeks in the job.

“I want to be able to go away and think about how I have achieved something for Ripon,” she said.
