The funeral of PC Andrew Bramma – the police officer killed in the line of duty while answering a 999 call near Ripon – has been held.

More than 30 police officers formed a guard of honour in tribute to their friend and colleague as his coffin was carried into a church near Leeds on Tuesday, January 22.

PC Bramma died when his patrol van collided with a tree at West Tanfield, near Ripon, while responding to an emergency call on Saturday, January 5, at around 7pm.

The service – held at Pudsey Parish Church – was attended by hundreds of mourners, including officers from North Yorkshire Police (NYP) and Greater Manchester Police (GMP), along with family and friends.

PC Bramma, who was originally from Yorkshire and aged 32, served as a beat officer for GMP since 2008 before transferring back to his home county just four months ago.

A minute’s silence was also held by officers and staff at police stations across the county at 1.45pm to coincide with the start of PC Bramma’s funeral. Prayers followed the period of silence at Harrogate Police Station, where PC Bramma was based, and at NYP’s Newby Wiske headquarters.

Speaking before the service, Temporary Chief Constable Tim Madgwick, of NYP, said: “He was conscientious, did the right thing and was just a good British police officer.”

Mr Madgwick said PC Bramma’s wife Kathryn and parents were “clearly devastated” by his death. Floral wreaths spelt out the words “Son” and “Daddy”.
