FB Taylor funeral at Ripon Cathedral

The funeral of Ripon entrepreneur Frederick Barry Taylor – known as Barry – was held at Ripon Cathedral on Friday, November 2 at 1pm.

Mr Taylor died at his home on South Grange Road, Ripon on Saturday, October 20, after a short illness. He was aged 77.

Mr Taylor founded a local cable laying company in 1966, which became a limited company – FB Taylor Cable Contractors Ltd – in 1976. At its peak in the 1980s the company employed over 400 local people and has now been handed over to Mr Taylor’s children John Taylor and Colleen Ellerker. He leaves a wife Cheryl and six children, 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, from a previous marriage.

Ex-deputy hornblower John Richmond read the main eulogy at the funeral.

“The Cathedral was absolutely packed,” he said. “It was a very impressive service and a great tribute to Barry. So many people turned up and there was lots of laughing and story telling afterwards. Barry would have been very impressed that a big bonfire took place on the day of his funeral at Ripon Racecourse.”

The funeral of Mr Taylor, who was a keen singer and dancer, opened with one of his favourite songs – Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World.

“He loved dancing and singing, especially in the rock and roll period of the late 1950s,” said Mr Richmond.
