Face recognised from Wheatsheaf picture

A RETIRED gardener and landscaper from Ripon has contacted the Gazette to say he has recognised his great-grandfather in the old Wheatsheaf pub photograph we published four weeks ago.
The picture appeared in our March 9 edition after Freeman and former Mayor of Ripon, John Richmond, saved it from destruction when the building on Harrogate Road was demolished to make way for a new care home.
When Jim Donoghue, 75, of Grove Close, saw the picture he immediately recognised the man sat on the front row at the left as his great-grandfather, who was also called James ‘Jim’ Donoghue.
“He was a cabman in Ripon for a long time, and then he went to work for Williamsons,” said Mr Donoghue.
His great-grandfather was born in 1860 and spent 27 years working for Messrs Blatchley and Hullah for whom he operated a two-horse carriage on market days between the train station and city centre.
From there, he moved to T and R Williamson Ltd becoming a painter in its packing department.
He was married at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Church on November 26, 1881, to Elizabeth Lofthouse from Roecliffe, near Boroughbridge, and together they had three sons and three daughters.
Mr Donoghue died peacefully in his sleep on January 25, 1936, aged in his mid-seventies – ten months before his great-grandson was born.
