Community volunteer drivers plea

The Northallerton and Bedale Community Car Schemes are looking for volunteer drivers to help people get to health appointments and pick up their weekly groceries.

Kevin Holt, community transport officer for Northallerton and District Voluntary Service Association, said: “Volunteer drivers are not left out of pocket – they are paid 45p-a-mile for the use of their vehicle. We are seeking friendly people who can offer regular or occasional lifts.”

The service provides more than 7,000 essential journeys each year to people in need and receives many messages of gratitude.

One recent passenger said: “Thank you for sending me a lovely driver, he was so kind and waited for me at the hospital while I had my appointment.”
