Flooding in Boroughbridge. Water levels reached 14.1 metres at the River Ure in Boroughbridge on Monday afternoon.

A 62-year-old man was rescued from Boroughbridge Marina in the early hours of yesterday morning (January 1) after a fellow boat owner jumped into the over-flowing waters to retrieve him.

The man was saved due to the “brave actions” of a woman who owns a boat in the Marina, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. The woman jumped in to rescue him upon hearing the man fall into the water. Two fellow Marina residents helped her pull the man from the water onto a partially submerged jetty, which had been affected by high water levels after a bout of severe rainfall over the new year period.

Firecrews and ambulance services arrived at the scene at 2.04am. The rescue mission involved a full water rescue mobilisation with fire appliances from Boroughbridge, level three swift water rescue teams from Ripon and Selby, an additional appliance from Ripon, and the water rescue boat from York, together with a level five trained swift water rescue officer.

As the rescue team arrived, the man had already been helped onto the end of the jetty.

Paramedics were unable to reach the man so firecrews using level two swift water rescue equipment, with ropes and a stretcher, carried him across the swamped jetty to the waiting paramedics.

He was left in the care of the paramedics for treatment, after suffering from the cold of the early morning water conditions.
